Shop in Stallings has a diverse crowd

You never know who you might run into at a local coffee shop. Morning coffee
drinkers rush in to grab a cup of joe and head out to their busy days.
Almost two years ago, I wrote about The Coffee Garden's opening at Steven's
Mill Crossing shopping center in Stallings. Suzi and Jerry Butler were starting
new careers and a new business with their son, Brady, when they opened the
shop. They wanted a warm, inviting place.
The corner coffee shop has grown into a gathering place that welcomes all
types of folks. Perhaps that's one reason they have weathered the economy
and will celebrate their two-year anniversary just before Christmas.
Some customers read books on the patio; others log onto laptops. Most
coffee customers enjoy greeting each other. On a recent morning, a couple of
political candidates were on the scene.
Harry Stokes is running for Stallings Town Council, District 1, as a write-in
candidate. Harry is involved in the community and in schools, but is new to
politics. For several days, he met anyone who showed up at The Coffee
Garden. Folks could sip a latte and ask questions about the town's important
issues.
Wyatt Dunn, who is running for re-election to town council, joined Harry the
morning I was there. Talking to them, I learned that Stallings residents can
vote for candidates in all districts - not just the candidates in the district they
live in.
Mayberry had Floyd's Barber Shop. Stallings has The Coffee Garden.
There's nothing like a small town. You can run into political and community
leaders at the grocery store, gas station or a coffee shop. And they speak to
you.
